TALKING ABOUT: ONLY IN SAIGON

September 15, 2015 Pauline Nguyen
Only in Saigon

In search of happenings new and good, old and better, we came across a crew of talented young producers and videographers, putting in some work to highlight the lifestyle movement of today's youth in modern Saigon. From sneaker talk to hand-crafted beers, their evocative videos give a peek into the visions behind these forward-thinking, style-conscious, entrepreneurial-spirited pioneers of their generation.

But that's not all - they also recognize and celebrate, in an equally handsome and reverent manner, the faces and crafts of the older, aging generation whose professions and art embody the heart and soul of the city.

It's an exciting time to be in Vietnam to witness first-hand the revolution of the country's subculture led by guys like them. They launched only a couple of months ago, but are already commanding a broad following, with 7 published videos and more on the reel. Catch them if you can. https://vimeo.com/onlyinsaigon/videos

Quang Minh Nguyen Pham talks about his brand Headless, his band Razor Leaf and his expectations for culture and Vietnamese young people.

In the latest collaboration with Saigoneer, we entered the shop of famed Shoemaker Trinh Ngoc, located at 50 Ly Chinh Thang, District 3. His story is one of success and strife, as he was twice displaced by wars and once the cordwainer of choice for the Cambodian royal family.

SLEEPLESS IN SAIGON

With already 12 months behind us and decidedly another 3 to go, we made our way back to Saigon, a budding metropolis of young creatives and entrepreneurs. Though it's long been the country's center of commerce for locals and  foreigners alike, in the recent years, there's been an increasing infiltration of relevant fashion, art, and music enhanced by this new wave of progressive minds.

We came here with the notion of setting some groundwork for what's to come post-voyage, excited to be in the midst of this imminent cultural transformation, though mildly circumspect about the fate of age-old traditions. In our hearts, we hope this collision of old and new will coexist well into the distant future, while retaining their respective charisma and authenticity.

I haven't done it justice, but there's a wide array of mouth-watering food, savory and sweet. The people are warm and welcoming, friendly and genuine. The landscape is rich and diversified, colorful and breathtaking. The country is full of adventures at every corner. If you haven't been to Vietnam, put it on your list. More photos and stories from our journey through here soon, but for now, these will have to do.
